PHOTOGRAPHY
Overview
The Photography Centre is equipped with a wide range of facilities, allowing students the opportunity for hands-on learning in areas including traditional black & white printing, traditional colour printing, digital
printing, and a wide variety of historical and experimental photographic processes:
The traditional B&W and Colour Darkroom complexes contain in total fifty-nine enlarger stations, including fourteen mural printing stations and two large format wall projection stations. The Colex Colour Processor will develop traditional colour prints up to thirty inches wide, while Basic and Advanced B&W darkrooms contain large sinks for hand format.
The Epson Imaging Lab is equipped with Macintosh computers, film and print scanners and large format Epson inkjet printers, upon which students make photo-quality digital prints up to sixty inches wide. Students can also output digital negatives in this facility, which in turn can be used in our Historical Processes area to create Cyanotypes, Van Dyke Brown prints, and Albumen prints.
The Historical Processes area is equipped with a Stat Camera and UV Exposure Unit. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in old 19th Century techniques. Photography Staff assist by preparing chemical formulas for students, which are weighed and mixed using recipes from the past.
The Print Finishing Room is used for trimming, drymounting, mat cutting, and photo editing purposes.
Three Shooting Studios accommodate photography students who wish to produce indoor still life, portrait and tableau pieces. The studios are equipped with Mole Richardson tungsten lights and various studio accessories. Speedotron Strobe units can be signed out from the Photo Equipment Cage .
The Photo Equipment Cage has available for sign-out a wide range of portable equipment, including: 4”x 5” view cameras, digital cameras, filters, light meters, film developing tanks, and portable strobe kits, to name just a few of the items available to students. Much of this equipment is available for overnight sign-out for students interested in location photo shoots.
