Beyond the Page: Text in Visual Art and Performance

Prerequisite: some art, design, craft training, or equivalent experience.
In this multidisciplinary course, students are encouraged to reconsider the very nature of ‘text’ as they move language off the page and into less traditional spaces like the gallery and public space. Students will conceptualize several short text-based projects that will culminate in a final project in their medium of choice: mixed media 2D works, installation, film/video, sculpture, performance, sonic works, or interactive media. The class will consist of a short lecture/discussion as students reflect upon the work of other artists that have experimented in the use of text in visual and sonic art forms.

The Graphic Novel

In this interdisciplinary workshop series for writers, artists, and designers, students will experiment with the comic medium as they explore the interplay between image and text, form and content. Drawing cues from historical and contemporary examples of textual/graphic work, students will conceptualize comic projects in various forms, constructing compelling narratives through dialogue and visual representations. By the end of the series students will have produced a short comic or graphic work.

The Art of the Blog

This class examines blogging from an art and design perspective. Students gain the skills to communicate effectively online. Topics include developing a unique voice, creating a personal virtual identity, maintaining an audience, information and accountability, and integrating text with images, graphics, video and audio content. Other tools for online communication such as Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook are explored. This is a  qualifying course towards the Certificate in Digtal Media Skills.

Collecting Contemporary Art

Introduction to 3D Modeling for Design

Introduction to Encaustic Painting

Students are introduced to the remarkable technique of encaustic painting, the application of molten colored wax to a surface. Throughout history, artists have used this method to build subtle transparent glazes and thick sculptural surfaces. This course focuses on the technical applications of encaustic in painting and sculpture in the context of a safe studio practice. Studio work will be supported by demonstrations, slide presentations, and critique.

Introduction to Digital Photography

Bridge the Gap, Professional Development for Emerging Artists

Topics include contract negotiation, legal issues, taxation, proposal and grant writing, marketing, commercial galleries, artist-run centres, art collectives, portfolio development, acquiring space and equipment, arts administration, and arts advocacy.

Sustainable Business Strategies

This course provides design professionals with the tools needed to develop a sustainable business plan. The course explores several frameworks of sustainability and sustainable design. Students then learn to channel their creativity into a viable business framework through the use of case studies, engaging presentations and interactive learning activities. Three of the classes are conducted at organizations representative of the GTA sustainability community (easily accessible by public transit). There will also be guest presenters from local firms that are successfully practicing sustainable design. Students will enhance their understanding through a group project that practically applies the concepts explored in the course.

This course teaches the participant a working knowledge of core concepts and strategies to reduce the environmental impact of the built environment in Canada. The course highlights how these core concepts and strategies can be used in various LEED rating systems. 'Building Green with LEED: Core Concepts and Strategies' is an intensive course intended to provide a comprehensive overview of techniques, approaches, materials and technologies used in creating greener buildings and communities. It will provide an introductory level of familiarity with the Rating System, but should not be construed as a study prep course for those students who wish to take the LEED Professional Accreditation Exam.

Design Matters: OCAD/AGO Design Camps
Summer camp on Toronto’s ultimate art campus! OCAD, in partnership with the AGO, is offering an entirely new camp experience for children ages 6 to 13 years. OCAD faculty will lead 2-week long design camps, in OCAD studios, exploring architecture, environmental design, textiles, graphic design and much more. This full day program includes daily activities at the AGO, sketching trips around the neighbourhood, sports and recreational activities in Grange Park, swim days, pizza lunches and a culminating exhibition for parents. Design Matters: Animal Architecture (Ages 6-10)
Two week session:
Session 1: July 5 toJuly 16, 2010
Animals are some of the best designers on the planet and like humans they use a variety of methods and materials to construct shelters that are safe, weather resistant, durable and beautiful.  From seashells to bird's nests, animals demonstrate complex building techniques and naturally manufacture materials that humans are learning to use to become better designers themselves.  Explore the remarkable world of animal architecture with us this summer and learn to create designs inspired by nature.

Design Matters: Materials Rediscovered (Ages 6-7)
Two week session:
August 3 to Aug 13, 2010  (no camp Aug 2)
Discover age-old ways of creating objects using fun materials and tools.  Invent a 'body sculpture' and make jewelry out of natural and recycled materials - design and dye wearable art, and create vessels out of unexpected materials!

Design Matters: Say What? Tell the World (Ages 6-10)
One week session:
Session 5: August 30 to September 3, 2010
How do we get important ideas and messages out to the world? What messages do you think are important? Explore the ways in which designers think about and produce effective communication campaigns, using visual and verbal language, and traditional and digital media. The powerful relationship between word and image is a key focus as we brainstorm and collaborate to produce a series of stories to tell the world.

Design Matters: The Backyard Designer (Ages 8-13)
Two week session:
Session 2: July 19 to July 30, 2010 
Have you ever wanted to grow vegetables or plant a tree, but didn't know where to begin?  We can help!  Learn the basics of backyard landscape design through digital and craft-based projects that will teach you about what plants grow best in our climate, how colour is used and why it is so important int he garden, and help you discover the trade secrets used by landscape designers to establish mood, harmony and balance.

Design Matters: The Power of Design (Ages 8-10)
Two week session:
Session 3: Aug 3 to Aug 13, 2010 (no camp August 2)
Life is full of things we can’t control. How can we act constructively to take them on? How does design address our personal needs? How does it keep us safe, dry and comfortable? What lessons does nature offer? Discover the power of design as a problem-solving tool we will use digital media, brainstorming techniques and a variety of design tools and processes to explore making things that matter.

Working from stories and themes, we will explore the ways in which designers think about and make places and spaces we enjoy.
