ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Although the primary criterion for admission to OCAD is a portfolio assessment, strong academic skills are essential for overall success.
Academic Requirements
The following academic requirements must be met to complete the admission process.
For Ontario applicants:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma, (OSSD)
- Six Grade 12 U or M courses with a minimum overall academic average of 70%,
- Grade 12 U English (ENG4U) with a minimum final grade of 70%.

For Canadian applicants outside Ontario:
Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma with a minimum overall academic average of B or 70% numeric equivalent including a Grade 12 English with a minimum of 70%. Detailed information can be found here, Academic Requirements by Province. (Please also review additional requirements below.)
For international applicants:
Secondary School Graduation equivalent to Grade 12 in Ontario and:
From countries with English as the official language of instruction, a minimum grade of B or 70% numeric equivalent in English 12 or equivalent.
From countries with a language other than English as the official language of instruction, applicants are required to present a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or equivalent test (TOEFL and equivalent test scores). International students must have a valid Study Permit (student visa) and valid University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) before registering at OCAD. (Please also review additional requirements below.)
For mature applicants:
A mature applicant is at least 21 years of age by September 1st of the year of intended enrolment. All applicants, including Canadian citizens, must provide proof of proficiency in English. (Please also review additional requirements below.)
For Advanced Standing and Transfer of Credit (Prior Learning Assessment):
OCAD offers a limited number of spaces for students with Advanced Standing. You are eligible to apply if you have one year of post-secondary visual art or design education that is the equivalent of OCAD’s first year. Original transcripts, a statement of intent and proof of proficiency in English is required. Your acceptance and year-level placement is dependent on an assessment of your portfolio, which happens during OCAD's study week in February.(Please also review additional requirements below.)
Applicants who do not qualify for Advanced Standing but have successfully completed courses at an accredited institution may be eligible for Transfer of Credit.

OCAD currently has Articulation Agreements with the following Post-Secondary Institutions:
Durham College (Foundations in Art & Design Program –FAD)
Yukon College - Klondike Institute of Art & Culture (School of Visual Arts)
Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning (Art Fundamentals Certificate Program)
Fleming College (Visual and Creative Arts Diploma - VCAD)

Additional Requirements:
In addition to the Grade 12 English requirement, applicants whose first language is not English and who have resided and studied less than four years in a country where the official language is English, are required to present a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or equivalent. Please note: this does not apply to French Canadians.
