IN-STUDY BURSARIES
OCAD Student Assistance Fund (OSAF) Bursary Program
The OSAF Bursary Program is established on a yearly basis through tuition revenues. Bursaries through this program range in value from $500 to $2,500. Approximately 500 students are assisted annually.
Students must meet the following criteria in order to be considered for a bursary through this program:
- Be studying on a full-time basis in one or two semesters at OCAD during the 2009/2010 academic year in an undergraduate or graduate program that is approved for OSAP
- Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person
- Be an Ontario resident
- Demonstrate financial need through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) for the 2009/2010 academic year.
No application is required. Students who apply for OSAP by Friday, September 25, 2009 will automatically be considered. Recipients and bursary amounts will be identified through information provided by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities in order to deliver OCAD’s commitment to Ontario’s Student Access Guarantee, which states that students with financial need will have enough funding to meet the direct educational costs (tuition, books and other mandatory fees) of attending university.
OSAF Bursaries have now been fully allocated; results were emailed on December 3 and 4, 2009 to students who will be receiving bursaries through this program.
Ontario Aboriginal PSET Bursary Program
OCAD is pleased to announce that the Government of Ontario has allocated funding to create a bursary fund for Aboriginal students through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities’ Aboriginal postsecondary education funding approach. The Ontario Aboriginal Postsecondary Education & Training (PSET) Bursary Program will provide direct support to Aboriginal students with financial need to access support to aid their participation in postsecondary education and training.
A bursary is a non-repayable award given on the basis of financial need. Ontario Aboriginal PSET Bursaries will range in value from $1,000 to $3,500. The total amount available to OCAD students in 2009/2010 through this fund is $7,572.
Students must meet the following criteria in order to apply for a bursary through this program:
- Be of Canadian Aboriginal heritage (either First Nation status or non-status, Métis or Inuit)
- Be studying on a full- or part-time basis at OCAD during the 2009/2010 academic year
- Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person
- Be an Ontario resident as defined by OSAP
- Demonstrate financial need of at least $1,000 (or the amount of the award) for the 2009/2010 academic year
The deadline to apply is Monday, January 25, 2010, 4 p.m.
2009/2010 Ontario Aboriginal Postsecondary Education & Training Bursary Application
Ontario First Generation Bursary Program
OCAD is pleased to announce that the Government of Ontario has allocated funding to create a bursary fund for First Generation Students through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities’ Access and Opportunities Strategy. This bursary opportunity will provide direct support to students with financial need who are the first in their families to attend college or university. Each Ontario First Generation Bursary is approximately $2,500 (award amounts can vary) and is given as a tuition credit. A limited number of bursaries are available. CONFIRMED: The total amount available in 2009/2010 is $23,974.
Students must meet the following criteria in order to apply for a bursary through this program:
- Be studying on a full-time basis at OCAD during the 2009/2010 academic year
- Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person
- Be an Ontario resident as defined by OSAP
- Demonstrate financial need of at least $2,500 (or the amount of the award) through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) for the 2009/2010 academic year
- Be a student whose parents do not have a university education

Métis Nation of Ontario Student Award Program
The Métis Nation of Ontario Student Awards Program was established through the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund (OSOTF) by the Métis Nation of Ontario. CONFIRMED: One bursary in the amount of $845 (may be divided) is available. Students must meet the following criteria in order to apply for a bursary through this program:
- Be enrolled as a full- or part-time program student at OCAD for the 2009/2010 academic year
- Be a Canadian resident Métis
- Demonstrate financial need
- Students who are Métis, studying on a full- or part-time basis at OCAD and who have financial need, are eligible to apply.

Norman & Margaret Jewison Charitable Foundation Bursary
The Norman & Margaret Jewison Charitable Foundation Bursary is donated on an annual basis to an Aboriginal OCAD student. CONFIRMED: One bursary in the amount of $2,000 (may be divided) is available in 2009/2010.
Students must meet the following criteria in order to apply for a bursary through this program:
- Be a Canadian resident Aboriginal individual who is either First Nation status or non-status, Métis or Inuit
- Be enrolled as a full- or part-time program student at OCAD for the 2009/2010 academic year
- Demonstrate financial need

OTSS Graduate Studies Bursary Program
The OTSS Graduate Studies Bursary Program is established on a yearly basis with revenue generated from donations and endowments to the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS). OTSS Graduate Studies Bursaries generally range in value from $1,000 to $5,000 depending on individual circumstances.
CONFIRMED: The following bursaries have been confirmed as available through this bursary program for 2009/2010. (Complete ONE OTSS Graduate Studies Bursary Application to be considered for all of these.)
- Alumni Association Chancellor’s Bursary $1,630
- Ahasiw-Maskegon Iskwiw Bursary (for an aboriginal student) $1,735
- Olga Korpor Bursary (for fine art) $3,030
- Charles Pachter Bursary (for fine art) $6,090
- Ruby Crichton Vivash Bursary (for design) $3,300
- William & Phyllis Waters Bursary $4,474
- Edward & Dorothy Williams Bursary (for art) $2,260
Students must meet the following criteria in order to apply for a bursary through this program:
- Be newly admitted to OCAD and beginning graduate studies in September 2009 in one of the following three programs: the Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media & Design; the MFA in Criticism & Curatorial Practice; or the Master of Design in Strategic Foresight & Innovation
- Be studying on a full-time basis at OCAD in one or two semesters during the 2009/2010 academic year
- Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person
- Be an Ontario resident
- Demonstrate financial need (priority is given to OSAP students; non-OSAP students will ONLY be considered if funds are available)
- Special consideration for targeted awards may be given to students with permanent disabilities and students of Aboriginal descent.

OCAD Emergency Bursary Program
A bursary is a non-repayable award given on the basis of financial need. Emergency bursary funds are designed to assist students who experience an unexpected financial crisis that is unplanned, beyond the student’s control, and has an immediate negative financial impact. Emergency bursaries range greatly in value, depending on individual circumstances and the payment format (tuition credit or cheque) will also vary. Emergency funds are limited. The Emergency Bursary Programs are established through endowments (OCAD Emergency Bursary Program) and tuition revenues (OCAD Student Assistance Fund (OSAF) Emergency Bursary Program).
Students experiencing a financial crisis are encouraged to come to the Financial Aid & Awards office to discuss their financial situation. Emergency bursary funding may be available, depending on the circumstances. As part of the application process, students will be asked to disclose and document the nature of the emergency, and provide details of how the emergency affects the student from a financial standpoint as well as identify other avenues of financial assistance that have been explored and/or exhausted. Applications are reviewed on a weekly basis from September to April.

- Be studying on a full- or part-time basis at OCAD during the 2009/2010 academic year
- Be a Canadian citizen, Permanent Resident or Protected Person
- Be an Ontario resident
- Demonstrate financial need through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) for the 2009/2010 academic year
Students must meet with a Financial Aid Administrator to discuss their circumstances and request an application.
